Twenty European cities perfect for a 2–3 day break from the UK — including the best months to visit, what they cost and the one thing not to miss in each.

A great European city break needs three things: a short flight, a walkable centre, and enough variety to fill three days without feeling rushed. These twenty cities all qualify, and we've grouped them by vibe so you can pick by mood rather than scrolling through a list.

Classic & cultural ### Paris Three days, the Marais as your base, one museum and a lot of wandering. Don't miss the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette for free views. Full guide: [Paris travel guide](/destinations/paris-france).

### Rome Doable in 72 hours if you accept you'll need to come back. Avoid August.

### Vienna Coffee houses, Klimt and the best classical concerts in Europe. November–March for the proper indoor café season.

### Florence The most concentrated dose of Renaissance art on the planet. Two full days is enough.

Cool & creative ### Berlin Endless. Pick a neighbourhood (Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain or Neukölln) and stay there.

### Lisbon Three days, hill walks, viewpoints, Time Out Market once. Day trip to Sintra is mandatory.

### Copenhagen Cycling-focused, design-conscious, expensive. Worth it.

### Amsterdam Best in spring and early autumn. Skip the queues at the Rijksmuseum by booking a 9am slot.

Cheap & cheerful ### Krakow The best-value city break in Europe. Old Town, Kazimierz district, Auschwitz day trip on day three.

### Budapest Thermal baths, ruin pubs, river views. Excellent food scene that's still affordable.

### Sofia Possibly the cheapest capital in the EU. Pair with a day on Vitosha mountain.

### Tirana Underrated. The Bunk'Art museums alone are worth the trip.

### Belgrade Gritty, lively, very cheap. Great food, great nightlife.

Coastal & warm ### Barcelona Beach, Gaudí, tapas. Avoid August unless you like crowds.

### Valencia Smaller, friendlier and 30% cheaper than Barcelona with arguably better food.

### Naples The cheapest major Italian city and a base for Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Capri.

### Porto A long weekend in Porto with a day in the Douro Valley is one of the best wine trips in Europe.

Snow & atmosphere ### Stockholm Great in summer, magical in December. The Vasa Museum is one of Europe's best.

### Reykjavík Three days plus a Golden Circle tour and a Sky Lagoon evening. The most you can do without renting a car.

### Tallinn Medieval old town, frozen in time. Pair with Helsinki via the 2-hour ferry.

How long to actually stay Most of these cities reveal themselves at three nights / two-and-a-half days. A long weekend Friday evening to Monday morning works perfectly. Stretch to four nights if you're flying long-haul to reach them or planning a day trip.

Booking strategy - **Fly Friday night, return Sunday night.** This is more expensive but maximises ground time. - **Or fly Thursday night, return Sunday morning.** Often £100 cheaper for the same number of nights. - **Stay centrally.** A 20% accommodation premium is almost always worth the time and taxi fares saved. - **Pre-book one "anchor" activity.** A walking tour on day one orients you and almost always pays back the £15 in directions, recommendations and friends made.

Common mistakes to avoid - **Trying to do two cities in three days.** You'll see neither properly. - **Booking the cheapest flight at 6am out and 11pm back.** Looks great until you've lost a day each end and arrived exhausted. - **Eating only at restaurants on the main square.** Walk two blocks in any direction first. - **Skipping insurance.** £15 covers your weekend; one missed flight costs ten times that.
