Top 10 Beach Destinations in Europe

From Albanian coves to Croatian islands and Portuguese surf beaches — our pick of the ten best European beach destinations and when to visit them.
Europe's coastline gives you the choice of glassy Mediterranean coves, Atlantic surf beaches, fjord-edged Scandinavian sands and everything in between. These ten destinations are the ones we keep recommending — each picked for the quality of the beach itself, not just the town behind it.
1. Ksamil, Albania The standout of the [Albanian Riviera](/travel-guides/best-places-to-travel-2026). White pebble beaches, water clarity that genuinely rivals the Maldives, and prices that haven't yet caught up with neighbouring Greece. Best May–early July or September.
2. Hvar, Croatia The poster-child Dalmatian island. The Pakleni archipelago off the coast offers some of the cleanest swimming in the Mediterranean. Skip July–August unless you enjoy crowds.
3. Lagos, Portugal The western Algarve has Europe's most dramatic coastline — sandstone cliffs, hidden grottos and reliable Atlantic surf. Great for couples and families alike.
4. Sardinia (Costa Smeralda) Turquoise water, granite islands and beaches that look engineered. Expensive in August but excellent value either side of high season.
5. Mykonos & Naxos, Greece Mykonos for the party-and-sunset combination, Naxos right next door for quieter family beaches. Ferry between them in 45 minutes.
6. Comporta, Portugal A 90-minute drive south of Lisbon and an entirely different world — long, empty Atlantic beaches and pine forest behind. The chic, low-key alternative to the Algarve.
7. Sicily (San Vito Lo Capo) Powder-fine sand, shallow water and the kind of seafood that makes you cancel your flight home. Fly into Palermo and drive an hour west.
8. Cíes Islands, Spain (Galicia) Capped at 1,800 visitors a day, requiring a permit, but the pay-off is one of the most pristine beaches in Europe. Ferry from Vigo or Cangas.
9. Lefkada, Greece (Egremni & Porto Katsiki) Less famous than the Cyclades but home to two of the most photographed beaches in Greece — turquoise water below white limestone cliffs.
10. Vlorë, Albania The new international airport at Vlorë (full operations in 2026) opens up the southern Albanian coast properly. Expect this list to look very different in three years as a result.
When to go - **May & June** — best balance of warm water, low crowds and reasonable prices. - **July & August** — peak season, peak prices, but full beach-club energy. - **September** — water is at its warmest after a summer of heating up. Most travellers' favourite month. - **October** — quiet, cheap, still warm in southern Spain, Greece, Croatia and Albania.
What to pack for any European beach trip - **Reef-safe sunscreen** (SPF 30 minimum, 50 for kids and fair skin). - **Water shoes** — half the best beaches in Croatia, Greece and Albania are pebbles, not sand. - **A light cover-up** — Mediterranean restaurants and shops typically require something over swimwear. - **Reusable water bottle** — bottled water at beach bars is often €4 a litre. - **Quick-dry travel towel** — packs to a quarter of the size of a regular towel.
Pairing beaches with cities The best Mediterranean trips usually combine a beach base with a nearby city for variety. Some of our favourite combinations: - **Lisbon + Comporta** — 90 minutes apart, totally different vibes. - **Athens + Naxos** — three hours by fast ferry. - **Split + Hvar** — one-hour ferry, perfect long weekend. - **Tirana + Ksamil** — drive the coastal road south for one of Europe's most underrated road trips. - **Naples + Capri** — the obvious one, but obvious for a reason.
