The European destinations the guidebooks haven't quite caught up to — twelve underrated places worth booking before everyone else does.
Europe in 2026 has become a victim of its own discoverability. Lisbon, Porto, Dubrovnik and Reykjavík are now firmly mainstream. But the continent is still full of cities, regions and islands that deliver the same magic without the queues. These twelve are worth booking before they don't qualify any more.
1. The Faroe Islands Wild, dramatic, almost mythological landscapes between Iceland and Scotland. Direct flights from Edinburgh, fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, and one of the best new restaurant scenes in Europe.
2. Saxon Transylvania, Romania Sighișoara, Sibiu and Brașov — fortified Saxon villages, hilltop monasteries and excellent value. Pair with a few days in Bucharest.
3. The Aeolian Islands, Italy Off Sicily's north coast, only really accessible May–October. Lipari, Salina and Stromboli are an antidote to the Amalfi Coast crowds.
4. Slovenia's Soča Valley Turquoise rivers, alpine villages, world-class hiking. The Triglav National Park might be the most beautiful place in Europe most people have never heard of.
5. North Wales (Eryri / Snowdonia) Genuinely overlooked even by UK travellers. The new bus network and slate-mining industrial heritage make it a serious alternative to the Lake District.
6. The Lofoten Islands, Norway Above the Arctic Circle, dramatic peaks rising directly out of the sea. Northern Lights in winter, midnight sun in summer.
7. The Pelješac Peninsula, Croatia A long, vineyard-covered peninsula south of Split. The wines are excellent, the beaches are quiet and Dubrovnik is a day trip away.
8. The Algarve's western coast (Costa Vicentina) The protected stretch between Sagres and Odeceixe. No high-rises, dramatic cliffs, surfers' beaches and one of the best long-distance walking trails in Europe (the Rota Vicentina).
9. Comporta, Portugal 90 minutes south of Lisbon. The chic, low-key Atlantic alternative to the Algarve.
10. Galicia, Spain The far north-western corner of Spain. Atlantic coast, Celtic heritage, the best seafood in the country, and almost no UK travellers outside the Camino route.
11. The Azores Subtropical Atlantic islands four hours from the UK. Hiking, whale watching, hot springs. São Miguel is the easiest first island.
12. The Peloponnese, Greece Skip the Cyclades for a week and drive the Peloponnese instead. Ancient sites, beach towns (Nafplio), mountain villages and far fewer crowds.
How "hidden gems" stop being hidden The cycle is predictable: a destination appears in three or four travel articles, gets a viral Instagram post, opens a new boutique hotel, and within 18 months it's fully discovered. To stay ahead: - **Follow specialist travel publications** (Condé Nast Traveller, Suitcase, Wanderlust) rather than mainstream news travel sections. - **Watch for new airline routes.** A new direct flight is the single biggest predictor of a destination's next 24 months. - **Note the second city.** When Porto becomes overwhelmed, Braga is next. When Hvar fills up, Vis follows. The pattern repeats.
What actually makes a great "hidden gem" trip - **Stay 3+ nights.** Hidden gems reward slow travel. Two-night stops don't do them justice. - **Eat where the locals eat.** In small destinations, the best meals are rarely at the most-Instagrammed restaurant. - **Hire a car.** Almost every destination above is best explored with the freedom to stop anywhere. - **Book accommodation owned by locals.** The Airbnb hosts and small guesthouse owners are some of the best sources of local knowledge anywhere. - **Travel May–June or September–October.** Hidden gems often have very limited capacity and high-season fills it instantly.
Pairing hidden gems with the obvious Most travellers won't fly somewhere unfamiliar for a whole week first time. The trick is to pair: - **Lisbon + Comporta** (3 + 4 nights) - **Dubrovnik + Pelješac** (2 + 4 nights) - **Sicily (Palermo) + Aeolian Islands** (3 + 4 nights) - **Athens + the Peloponnese** (2 + 5 nights) - **Reykjavík + the Faroe Islands** (2 + 4 nights via dedicated flight)
